2010 Celebrity Auction and Dinner

The Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac held its 2nd Annual Reach for the Stars Celebrity Auction and Dinner at Whispering Springs Golf Club on February 26. The event was held to help raise funds for afterschool programs and other services for youth and families. Over 140 people attended this casual, fun event designed to bring a little bit of Hollywood to our community.

Over 75 items were available on silent auction, including items from such celebrities as Clint Eastwood, Elton John, Betty White, Peyton Manning, and many more. More than 40 celebrities responded to a request sent out by the Club this winter, sending autographed original drawings and photographs back for auction. Not to be out done, many local businesses and individuals stepped forward and contributed one-of-a-kind items that auction attendees couldn’t live without. Items donated by CW Smith Jewelers, The Classic Cut, Grande Cheese, the FDL YMCA, and Gueller’s Photography were just a few of the great items received in support of this unique event.

Tying the event together was a tremendous shrimp and seafood boil provided by Brian Carter and Fond du Lac Seafood, Co. Of the partnership, Mary Mullen, Board President of the Boys & Girls Club said, “Without the support of great local businesses like Fond du Lac Seafood, the Boys & Girls Club could not provide the great services it does for youth and families in our community.” FDL Seafood also provided the meal for the inaugural event in 2009.

Overall, the event raised over $14,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac. Event chairperson Joanne Schneider said of the event, “We are so blessed. The support we have received for this event is unprecedented and will allow us to do so much for the kids.” This event marks the single largest fundraiser in the relatively young organization’s history, who opened its doors just 15 years ago as an extension of the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh. “We serve more than 350 youth per day at 8 afterschool program locations,” said Dan Hebel, VP of Operations for the Club. “With a growing membership of over 1,300 youth, the funds generated from this event will go directly to sustaining the quality programs we offer each and every day.”

Thank you for a great event, and we'll see you next year!

2009 Corporate Challenge

This fall, the Boys & Girls Club and YMCA of Fond du Lac collaborated once again to present the 2nd Annual Corporate Challenge. Eight local businesses took part in six challenging events for the title of Corporate Challenge Champion. Events this year included: Dodgeball, Volleyball, Hot-Shot Basketball, Bowling, Pictionary and Team Trivia.

In the Inaugural event in 2008, National Exchange Bank won the first championship title, and proudly displayed their team trophy in bank lobby. The performed valiantly in defense of their title, but turned over the championship crown to newcomers Mercury Marine. Mercury Marine was the only team to 1st place in two events, Volleyball and Bowling. Their spirited participation is exactly what the Corporate Challenge is all about, and we appreciate them very much, as well as all of our other teams: National Exchange Bank, Fox Valley Savings Bank, Grande Cheese, Baker Cheese, Mid-States Aluminum, the Boys & girls Club, and the YMCA.

A very special thank you goes to our two event sponsors, Grande Cheese and Baker Cheese. Without their generous support, this event would not be possible. We have already starting the planning stages for next year’s challenge, and we would love to expand the Challenge to include more teams. If you are interested in getting involved, please call Dan Hebel at the Boys & Girls Club at 924-0530. Mercury Marine has the championship for now, but they are ready for the challenge of both old and new opponents next year!

11th Annual Duck Race Results

On August 27th, the Club held it's 11th Annual Duck Race in the swimming pool at the Fond du Lac Family YMCA.  More than 1,100 rubber ducks crammed up to the starting line ready to race the 60 feet toward the finish line.  The action started fast, as our Mercury trolling motors created a current that shot them out of the gates and down the lane.  About 3/4 of the way there, our ducks encountered the "Bernuda Triangle" of the course, the deep end!  The ducks who led the pack started "losing their minds" and swam in a circle for a moment, allowing a few other ducks to pass them by.  After a couple seconds of uncertainty by the ducks, they again charged towards the finish line.  However, these ducks did not eat their Wheaties that day, they tired quickly, and some ducks all but gave up just a few inches from the finish line.  In the end, we had three ducks who did cross the finish line first, and they were the lucky winners at this year's event:

1st Place:  Shawn Justman, $1,000
2nd Place:  Twilight Optimists, $500
3rd Place:  Kathy Shafer, $250

In a true testament that anyone can win this race, our first place winner purchased just one duck and he won first prize!!!  So for anyone who thinks buying just one duck won't lead to a win, here is your proof.  Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's event, and we look forward to an even better race next year that is planned to take place in the brand new indoor waterpark at our new facility in partnership with the FDL YMCA.  With a slide and lazy river, there is no telling what the ducks will enounter next year!

A special thank you goes out to our event sponsors, K107 FM and Kohl's Department Store.  Thank you for you great support of this unique event!

2009 "Reach for the Stars" Celebrity Auction and Dinner

Event Results

On behalf of the committee who put on this fantastic event, we would like to say a sincere thank you to the 132 people who attended the 1st Annual Celebrity Auction!  It was a laid back, casual event that was enjoyed by all.  The shrimp boil provided by Brian Carter and Fond du Lac Seafood was a huge hit, and the appetizers provided by Lindstrom's Catering and Baker Cheese left all guests satisfied!  While the auction provided an opportunity for people to bid on items from their favorite celebrities and local artists/vendors, the music stylings of Stan and Marty brought a fun atmosphere to the evening.  It was a fun event that was enjoyed by all who attended, and we look forward to seeing everyone back for the 2nd annual event in 2010!

A special thank you goes out to our hosts, the American Legion Hall, for all that they did in support of our event.  If you're in the area, make sure you stop there and say hi to Tom and the gang and see all that their great location has to offer!

Auction Results

The Boys & Girls Club had 65 auction items that raised over $5,000 that will be used to support the Boys & Girls Club and it's programs.  With items from actors, actresses, athletes and musicians going to a wide range of bidders, it turned out to be a fun process for everyone!  Thank you to everyone who bid on an auction item, and congratulations to everyone who took an item home with the highest bid.  We are looking for an even better group of items for you in 2010, and we hope to see you there for all of the fun!
